Edmo Jazz Fest: Vincent Herring

Absolutely incredible sharp alto sax sound by a master at the Yardbird Suite Sunday evening. His world-class diverse quartet consisted of a Japanese-American string bassist, a famous white pianist (who did a transcendent featured solo and whom he won a Grammy with), and a (likewise) black Julliard drummer vet whom Herring always wanted to play with.

What a beautiful evening in the nicely-renovated AC’d Yardbird Suite enjoying vino and popcorn with my daughter who bought the tix as a Father’s Day gift! Simply outstanding: the venue, the band, the music. As good as it gets with Herring & co. playing a number of styles including bop, swing, funk, ballad, and other forms.

Herring will be sending me (shipping covered by him) an autographed copy of his latest CD (he ran out of them before the Edmonton show). He is and has been the best sax player on the scene for some time now.
