Another Lost Spelling Distinction

I keep seeing media using the present tense spelling of “lead” (leed) as the past tense as in “that lead to his impeachment trial”.
Of course, that spelling would be pronounced “leed” for such usage/s.
If you want to refer to the past verb tense of “lead”, you need to spell it “led” as in “that led to his impeachment trial”.
