You recall the movie Awakenings about Oliver Sacks’ work which showed what has been long known–that hearing an old song revives people’s memories, feelings, and consciousness.
Melodies and tunes certainly, spontaneously, do that all by themselves. (e.g., I can mentally/imaginatively/emotionally place/’relive’ myself at 5 listening to my grandmother’s music box if, today, I hear the tune to “Each His Own”, a fifties hit that box played.)
But yesterday with my 1960s song lyrics blog entry, I think we also see that language and words alone can do the same thing and, as readers, we automatically fill in the music and rest of the songs in personal responses for maximum comprehensive affect/effect.
