I predict great disappointment amongst Mockingbird fans. Its likely lesser quality will definitely take something away from the classic. TKAM was a one-shot wonder–that was a large part of its uniqueness, specialness and timing. Harper Lee got that one so right that any variation can only detract from or diminish the shine and halo of a classic work.
That the new book is being released to bolster the failing book publishers and their industry is the height of cynicism, much like going strictly by weekend box office receipts to determine if a movie is good or worth seeing. In the end, it is the pre-release buzz and advance sales (#1 on Amazon 5 months before publication) that have sealed this book’s release, not it quality or merits as art, Miss Lee’s dubious consent aside.
