A Great “Gatsby” Line from the Intro

“A sense of the fundamental decencies are parcelled out unequally at birth.”

An ironic line certainly, but which I have long taken to mean that a sense of what is decent (and right|) is not known, understood, and appreciated by some folks, perhaps too many.

Certainly missing “fundamental decencies” can lead to moral defectiveness and mutants such as the UCP types mentioned in the second-last blog entry.

And the sins and errors of a person or in one’s character can be seen when these “decencies” are absent or not present.

I have long appreciated the wisdom of Nick’s dad and Fitzgerald whenever I determine the decency and kindness in others, something which often has nothing to do with income or rank.

And there is certainly something fundamentally decent lacking in those who are liars, frauds, cheats, and those intoxicated with power.

“Earth’s the right place for love.

“I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.”
–Robert Frost, “Birches”

(despite all the hate, greed, selfishness, meanness, cruelty, violence, war, prejudice, discrimination, evil, division, paranoia, stupidity, ignorance. corruption, atrocities, depravity, and man’s “heart of darkness”.)

“Men alone are quite capable of every wickedness.”
–Joseph Conrad

“We have met the enemy and he is us.”
–Walt Kelly
……………………………..
Ringo Starr always talks of peace and love. Those are still the only ways to freedom, peace, hope, and salvation.

“All you need is love.”
–Lennon and McCartney
…………………………

Canadian critic Northrop Frye divided literature and life into “anxiety dream” and “wish fulfillment”.

That about sums everything up, methinks.

That and Hamet’s “paragon of animals”/”quintessence of dust” speech.

“What Makes you Angry, RD?”

Deena Hinshaw shrugging her shoulders announcing over 30 dead or a child dying with “conditions” as if to suggest these people were ‘write-offs’ or likely to die anyway. Very cold and, superiorly nasty. (“I’m all right, Jack”. My 2-martini lunches and high salary are intact. )

The UCPs cutting off funding for a warehouse of an important, hard-working emergency charity that has not only helped Edmontonians, but flood victims in Calgary and fire victims in Fort McMurray, driving the charity out of business.

They’re all the same these bloody, heartless, cold, and inhumane mutants. They’re not real, decent human beings, just mere technocrats fudging stats and destroying the good while the government wastes money willy-nilly elsewhere on things that don’t work, apps that no one uses or are hackable, and pipe-dream pipelines that go up in smoke because of Kenney’s incredible, bottomless stupidity.

Capt. Kirk used basic metaphors today:

light (life) and black (death).
The Blue Planet, indeed, is very small and fragile against the enormity of unforgiving space.
The time to activate more climate change is Now.

1 of about 7 truly good E.E. Cummings’ poems:

who knows if the moon’s
a balloon,coming out of a keen city
in the sky—filled with pretty people?
(and if you and i should

get into it,if they
should take me and take you into their balloon,
why then
we’d go up higher with all the pretty people

than houses and steeples and clouds:
go sailing
away and away sailing into a keen
city which nobody’s ever visited,where

always
it’s
Spring)and everyone’s
in love and flowers pick themselves

……………………………………………

(His best is likely “anyone lived in a pretty how town”)

Good for the Nobel Committee

refusing to buckle in to requests for an artificial quota boosting the number of female winners. Winners should be selected based on their achievements and merit, not gender political correctness.
