No Brains

Our PM does a bungee jump for his son’s birthday.

Yet another incredibly stupid choice, choosing to risk his life, not caring at all for the country’s potential fate sans a leader, all to satisfy a whim to please his son, who should have been smarter and more responsible and known better.

There you have it: Trudeau in a nutshell. Totally unnecessarily risking death and not thinking first/automatically about his country who elected him. Carelessly/stupidly frivolous to the core.

The Forgotten, Insightful Canadian Short Story Writer

Morley Callaghan who worked with friend Ernest Hemingway on a Toronto newspaper in the 1920’s and was signed by Scribner’s for his popular fiction-writing. His short stories, once compared to Chekhov, were always interesting glimpses into all forms of human relationships. (He was the first Canadian writer to write about gays and lesbians long before those terms were ever used.)

I selected several of his teachable stories for many of my textbooks including “Two Fishermen” and “A Sick Call”. Other strong, memorable ones from his most famous story collection (pictured here,1959) include “All the Years of Her Life”, “A Predicament”, “A Wedding Dress”, “The Little Business Man” a.k.a. “Luke Baldwin’s Vow”, “Now That April’s Here”, “One Spring Night”, and “It Had to Be Done”.

I owe a lot of who I am to

(Brian Kells, influential gr. 11 English teacher and long-time friend, who passed this year)

my 1950s-60s schooling, my university education, literature, my teaching years, my school textbook writing years, my poetry-writing, my music (listening, writing and performing), my parents, and my wife.

The daily life of the individual remains basic.

One has to have certain values, skills, resources, and attitudes that enable one to lead a fairly full, productive, meaningful life.

Although it is important to know what’s happening ‘out there’ at Screwball Central, you need to live your own life (and assist mate and family), first and foremost, in a way that is conscious, self-chosen, and free from outside interference and unnecessary intrusions and distractions.

Based on my long personal experience, it helps to be organized and to adapt to whatever serious or life changes without automatically melting down. (Change has long been just  a historical fact and process.)

Above all, the ability to think, critically think, and to feed oneself with whatever supports and to address missing pieces allows one to learn your own strengths and limitations.

Taking stock periodically is another good way to make smart, helpful changes and adaptations.

Despite the outside/external world being distracting, it pays to stay focused and true to oneself, one’s values, beliefs, and lifestyle.

A Capital H Global Hero, Jose Andres,

turns his attention to his own country, feeding large numbers of desperate hurricane-ravaged Floridians. I’ve mentioned before the Chef and Founder of World Central Kitchen; he has been active of late in Ukraine and other needy parts of the globe. A very impressive, selfless guy and an astute organizer and mobilizer of his food troops.
