Friday: Brubeck Bros. @ The Yardbird Suite

What a full moon evening! What an unbelievable spirited show! Place was packed.

Chris (bass, trombone) and Dan (drums) Brubeck are, of course, Dave Brubeck’s sons, top-notch musicians in their own right backed by a guitarist and pianist they’ve worked with for over 30 years now. Their impressive enthusiastic program was made up of songs mostly composed by Dave including “Rondo a la Turk” and “Take Five”.

Chris is the front man and he told interesting anecdotes and stories about Dave as the band showcased their strong new album TimeLine, released 60 years after Dave’s famous State Dept. Eurasian Tour as Jazz Ambassadors for America. All of this seemed very apropos with Father’s Day on Sunday and the boys still paying tribute to their father at the first gig of the current tour.

Afterward, I gave Chris and Dan a copy of a letter from Dave replying to an aspiring musician which they will use in the Brubeck newsletter. They were pleased to get some more insights into their Dad from this contact.
