Staying Positive Today

(Kadrush is a fine lyric poet-friend from the Kosovo region)

Yeah, all this distracting political and weather stuff is really beating people down.

As usual, we are down to personal choice in balancing our basic beliefs and values. I’ve had a great ‘non-fall’ (here in Edm). My wife and I went to Winnipeg for a week with our daughter to celebrate our 50th anniversary of meeting one year late (fires in MB last year. I’ve written about Wpg. earlier in the blog.)

Musically, there’s been the big, fun, unique Macca party at home Sunday (also on blog). Out this Saturday to the beautiful renovated Yardbird Suite to see and hear the hot new American jazz player Marquis Hill. Next week out to Edmonton Symphony to take in the fantastic Beatles show of facsimiles from two major Beatles albums Sgt. Pepper’s and the White Album.) Have also ordered the super deluxe White Album being released in Nov.

Poetically speaking, I am busier than ever. Was reading at the nice Upper Crust Cafe for the Stroll last week. Read 2 poems from my Albanian poet-friend’s new collection which I edited and reviewed. (This has led to a similar Foreward-writing gig with another fine Edmonton poet-friend Gerald St. Maur.)

And this week I hosted the readings at the same venue. Anyway, the busy, very entertaining, engaging season continueth…

Macca Day Here: A Case of Good Timing

(Nov. 2012)

McCartney live at Rogers tonight, but I’ve already seen him last time he was here–best concert I’ve ever been to.

Commemorating his Edmonton visit at home this afternoon with my daughter and companion coming over to watch his fantastic NY concert live from 2009 on DVD.

I have my entire Beatles collection (ncluding memorabilia, books, videos, CDs, DVDs, and LPs) out for us to peruse before the show.

We’ll finish with Chinese food being delivered as an encore feast.

Timing is most of the fun in pleasurable events and invented entertainment. Spontaneous useless pleasures, as someone once said; I think it was me.

Is Kavanaugh a man “more sinned against than sinning”?

Of course, there’s the small matter of the other accusations and his 3-year-old and juvenile demeanor against the Democrats at the hearing. This is a man who deserves an unconditional lifetime appointment with the capacity for rude insulting meltdowns, Dr.Jekyll/Mr. Hyde-style? Someone who would rationally judge others without malice, nastiness and spite? He’s totally unqualified for this dignified, and unbiased position.

The Risks of Being Helpful

Putting another person’s yogurt lid in the garbage. Garbage can top opens. I stand directly over and close to the can, throw the lid in; it misses and goes behind the garbage can, face down with the wet side smearing the floor. A mess. Arche/typical, eh?

The Prevailing Dearth of Common Sense (Cont’d)

(south of the border)

Let’s see if I’ve got this right. A sexual predator eludes about 20 women with cases against him to become POTUS. Then he helps other political sexual predators to get out of jams including his Supreme Court pick who may be the most egregious case of all. There are 4 accusers and many witnesses to the attacks of the latter. Uh, why is Kavanaugh even a candidate at this point? The Republicans are so thoroughly rotten and corrupt that they haven’t stopped this media circus and have tried to avoid the FBI investigation, kicking and screaming all the way. And there is only one person who has created all this political and gender division/implosion in America. That’s what even a shred of common sense would conclude.

Question of the Day:

What is a 15-year-old boy doing walking around with a knife at 3:40 in the morning, stabbing a bus driver 13 times and trying to make off with his bus?

Why isn’t he sleeping at home? Why isn’t he using the night to prepare himself for school the next day? What is he doing walking around with a knife at a transit centre? Why is he stabbing a hard-working older man who’s minding his own business?

Kid’s a nasty. dangerous criminal already and belongs in jail. He is a serious threat to innocent citizens. No mercy needed here.

This on the heels of the random LRT stabbing last week. Stupid Iveson keeps pussy-footing around the real dangers of his transit system. That weak response is ignorant and totally irresponsible. Being a bus driver is a very dangerous job in the city. Edmonton continues to be a dangerous city for ordinary mortals. Taking public transit is no longer safe. Facts.

September was a write-off in E-Town.

And October is going to tank for the next two weeks with more snow to come. Remember how fall used to be in these parts?

So, let me get this straight. Our summers will now be smoky write-offs, dangerous to health. Our falls are non-existent now. Rainy and cold. Winters will be longer. Springs?

…………………………………

Good news for local shopping centres and stores. People frustrated and limited by nature going more to shop. I know that screen entertainment will likely go up in use as people hunker down indoors. Already we’ve seen what’s become of kids in the summer as well as after school-hours. They stay inside at home and watch screens. As do parents after the workday. Watching the idiot box, now with more ‘boxes’ to choose from including phones. When I go for a walk after supper, that is what I see in the neighborhood. TV lights from windows everywhere.

The same lights that once flickered from windows of my childhood neighborhood as I went from house to house once a week in the evenings to collect for my paper route five memorable years. As I passed houses, the main light was often a tv screen as source. When I was invited inside a house to come in from the cold, inevitably a tv would be blaring inside. Evenings are the time for prairie homes to be centered on  tv viewing. If I was still collecting today, people would come to the doors talking on phones, kids would be walking around with tablets and adults might be sitting at laptops. More screens than ever.

That is what the technology companies figured out. They only had to keep putting out screens to the converted, to create a profitable, no-brainer (literally) market of brainwashed, hooked kids and grown-ups. A complete tech takeover. And the masses would mindlessly follow with barely a whimper. Sort of like Animal Farm.

Today being, becoming, and remaining an individual remains the most important remnant of what Orwell called ‘ownlife’ in Nineteen-Eighty-four. One has to look after own’s own life, mind, feelings, spirit, and soul. These cannot be entrusted to others who generally morph down to what we used to call The Machine in the sixties. The Machine will just use you and take your money. It will never love you no matter what the technocrats profess.

This means that you must, fundamentally, take responsibility for yourself and not blame others, claiming easy victimhood. It means that you must create your own life, follow your own bliss, and remain true to your best. It means not being distracted by the Machine and failing Nature, and being able to distract yourself by such things as novel reading, seeking out the best available arts and Nature (you may have to leave town). You also need to keep filling up yourself with new information, critically think for yourself, and educate yourself and your imagination (as Northrop Frye suggested). It all comes down to you, your choices, your value system, and your best dreams and plans.
