The Poem-a-Day Series, poem #75

Hugh, my longest and earliest friend. We started in grade 1 in 1955, later going to the same high school and university. We lived on the same street. We are still friends today and have exchanged visits. We continue to talk about the past, our old school friends, cultural trends, the arts, and music. Hugh is a bright guy and was the first friend I looked up to and deferred to, knowledge-wise. (With a special nod to Dave, his car bud, who joined us in high school daze.)

The Poem-a-Day Series, poem #74

Dedicated to Brian Kells, my gr. 11 English teacher at Silver Heights Collegiate, 1965-66, who passed 6 days ago at 86. I kept in touch with him from 2007-2022 via phone.

He was my role-model and influence for becoming a 30-year senior-high English teacher.

The Poem-a-Day Series, poem #73

Ever since 9/11, plane travel has changed. But one can die, as likely of a wasp bite–especially if it affects breathing– in one’s backyard. One just never knows how one will pass, and there are numerous ways that most people likely wouldn’t choose to die as in the poem. There is an absurdity potentially implicit to every nice-looking summer’s day.

PC Insanity

KFC has started using the term “keels” in lieu of “breasts”, thereby confuting a lot of customers who haven’t a clue what a keel is!

Most likely someone nutso hypersensitive somewhere was ‘offended’ about KFC’s ‘sexist menu’ or having to ask for breasts (uh, men have breasts, too, BTW).

Naivete on wheels. The possibilities on a neighborhood bike ride changed somewhat after 9/11. Given how many terrorists within Canada have mowed down pedestrians and others, one can’t necessarily guarantee that one will return from what was generally a pretty safe ride in my youth of the 50s and 60s and even into the 80s and 90s. Generally speaking, there are too many people with mental and political problems walking now amongst us.

To scare away nuisance magpies or crows–wave a broom.

To deal safely with ants around the patio: use vinegar in a spray bottle.
