Changing the Poetry Landscape in Canadian Secondary Schools

The two editions of Inside Poetry (1984 and 2001). The former was a very popular book used in grades 10-11 while the latter, did well enough with grade 12s, its target audience. The first edition uniquely used many popular songs such as Bruce Cockburn’s “Wondering Where the Lions Are”.

I am particularly proud of the second edition which featured six world poets’ work (including Margaret Atwood, Robert Frost, Wislawa Szymborska, and Pablo Neruda) and illustrated a broad-based response approach using many ‘ethnic’ writers from numerous non-caucasian cultures (ahead of its time). Likewise, it featured close to 50% women writers. This edition remains the best senior high introduction to poetry still available in Canadian schools.
