COVID & The Resultant Increase in Sedentary Lifestyle

along with consumption of more snack food as people laze about watching phones and tv not moving. There will, undoubtedly, be a major mass decline in North Americans’ health in the coming months unless they are getting fresh air, moving frequently, exercising, and watching what they eat.

I recommend buying a pedometer. I wear mine to do circuits around the house when the weather is too cold to get outside, aiming for 6,000 steps a day (at my age). Going up and down steps helps, too.

Follow Trump’s Advice

and you die a horrible, needless death. Like that poor schnook who died after consuming the fishtank tab, thinking it contained what T endorsed.

He should be sued for misleading the public: over 16,000 false claims in his first three years according to Washington Post fact-checkers. He definitely doesn’t know better than medical and science authorities; he is just an evil, massive ignoramus who knows absolutely nothing.

Life as Drama/a Play: The Olde Normal Suspended for the Masses

“Behind the shelter in the middle of a roundabout
A pretty nurse is selling poppies from a tray
And though she feels as if she’s in a play
She is anyway

In Penny Lane the barber shaves another customer
We see the banker sitting, waiting for a trim
And then the fireman rushes in
From the pouring rain
Very strange”
–Lennon and McCartney, from “Penny Lane”

…………………………………..

Life is very much a play, socially, anyway. We all give performances (something I talk about in the previous Hamlet magazine blog entry), but when we are socially isolating, that all stops and many people have ended up feeling lost, not surprisingly, not knowing what to do (the classic unstructured situation from psychology); our usual, conventional life flow mode on hold. Most/many people depend on their jobs and ‘roles’ to define themselves and give purpose to their lives.

The only ones still acting out there are the health care folks, delivery guys, workers in grocery stores, media types, and politicians at news conferences. With the exception of Trump’s continuing false roles, all of these roles are authentic and socially helpful.

Butchart Gardens in Victoria Closed

2 days ago. I had to cancel a May trip planned. There are many nice things to do in Victoria (afternoon tea at the Empress, a horse carriage ride through the back streets, the Bateman and BC museums, the shops downtown, staying at the Inn at Laurel Point–also closed), but Butchart Gardens is the #1 stop when arriving early in the morning to start the day. Always a good time to go. A major dose of man-made and natural beauty. Major endorphins.

A Neat Book about Another Sea Change

“Journey of the Magi”, a rare 4 page hand-sewn paperback, written by T.S. Eliot, published by Faber and Gwyer in 1927. 5000 copies were printed, but in 2020 you can’t find a copy for sale except ones of the 350 special eds.

I first read the poem in grade 12 and was intrigued by its images, enough to buy a, then, very scarce copy back in 2008. Great illustration by American avante-garde artist E. McKnight Kauffer. You can hear Eliot read the poem on YouTube.

In 1995, I developed

(the edition I used to study the play in grade 12, early 1967)

……………………………

a Hamlet magazine for grade 12 which ultimately was turned down by an interested publisher. There were many features I had written for the project. Herewith, selected highlights which can be enlarged. Maybe some of these will be of interest to students, teachers, and fans of Hamlet.
